Being part of Azerbaijan SSR during the Soviet period, the village was known as Pirchivan until 1957. According to the data, the population of the village were 98% Azerbaijanis. On 31 August 1957, the village was renamed to Zangilan. It was given the status of a town in 1967.
The village became part of the Armenian-occupied territories, under the control of Armenian forces on 29 October 1993 during the First Karabakh War.
It was liberated by the Azerbaijani Army on October 20 / 2020 during the 44 days war.

During the occupation Zangilan and several territories in Karabakh have exceperienced massive destruction of the ecosystem that can be caracterized as "Ecocide".
The aim on the Zangilan Occupation and Victory Museum Complex is to raise awareness on the devastating impacts of the war on the environment, looking into the future and focusing on the urgent need for the renewal and sustainable development.
Taking regenerative architectural approach we will achieve net-positive museum design.

The Building of the Occupation museum will be designed following bio-climatic parameters and biofillic design, to reduce energy consumptions and increase internal comfort.
The exhibition rooms and service spaces will be placed inside a second internal volume.

The Victory Museum design is inspired by natural patterns and a wall of Honor is designed to remember the name of the Martyrs of the war.

The interior is mainly divided into three spaces, two of them dedicated to exhibition paths, while the 3d space is dedicated to a 4D moving theater.

An Artistic project of international street art about history of Zangilan performed on the key ruins within the Memorial Park.
